—So why, do I use lard in my soap? My thought process is, this is a waste product of the meat industry, and by using it I am helping reduce waste and make the most of the life of an animal that was killed for ham or bacon. The animal has already been killed (and not for its fat, obviously), and all we’re doing is using the meat (and only the cuts we like, for the most part), and throwing out everything else. That’s shameful. So, I feel like by using lard I am
1. Reducing waste
2. Helping use the rest of an animal that was killed for other reasons, and would be dead regardless of whether or not I rescued some of its fat from the trash bin.
I use lard to add a creamy lather, conditioning properties and some hardness to the finished product.
Lard soap is highly compatible with the structure of the human cells. Our cell membranes are largely composed of saturated fats, just like the ones found in lard. This is the main reason why soaps based on animal fats have the nourishing properties that plant-based fats don’t deliver. Plant-based fats like olive or almond oil, for example, are a source of monounsaturated fats.
Items are handmade and may not be exactly as they appear in photo. This is a photo from the same batch and they will be similar.
Soap is for external use only, please use it on your hands first to ensure it does not irate your skin.
